A Thread Above The Rest is the new look and name for our little creative business, formally known as "Beehive craft & sewing classes". We are a small, independent company with big ideas...
We want to introduce and encourage creativeness in people, so have designed a series of workshops and products to help ignite a little bit of this in everyone.
We also want to form a creative hub for people with a similar passion or interest in making and creating, to come and join/ enjoy. Your family may not share your love of fabric and equipment but we do, so come and join us... share a cuppa or cake/ biscuit and enjoy the chat!
Where we are based
We have just opened our own little shop and workshop in Tiptree, Essex. Although we now have our shop we are still happy to come and run sessions in and around Maldon, Tiptree, Colchester and Chelmsford.
A bit of creative background
A Thread Above The Rest was created by award wining, creative Textile designer and maker Laura Brown.
Laura has always been passionate about making and creating different things. Even from a young age she could be found making outfits for her toys or stitching presents for her family and friends.
She now works within the creative industry, whilst running a series of sewing & craft workshops and classes around Essex.
Her creative journey started when she studied for her degree in Textile Design, from Huddersfield University. She specialised in weaving and interior design but continued to develop her knowledge, experience and skill in areas such as fitting, restoration, tailoring and wedding/ evening dress manufacturing.
She went on to study education in Essex, where she continued to develop her broader understanding of Textile design including modern decorative techniques, whilst teaching secondary Design Technology and adult education (for 13 years).
During this time Laura also continued to work on her own creative businesses, including LaudyMcB Designs, which has successfully won a number of awards and commissions.
Laura's background and experience has enabled her to develop and teach a series of workshops/ classes suitable for all levels... there are no silly questions and all levels of experience are welcome; whether its "I can't sew" beginners, those wanting to recover old skills or life-long crafters, it is a pleasure to share the techniques that have been learnt along the way.
